Matthew 24 Commentary
In the last chapter, the LORD Jesus spoke of His second coming. We are all interested. When?
This chapter explains everything. But we shall not get an answer to our senseless question. The date remains unknown for good reasons.
People who think there is no judgment take it easy with sin. After all, nothing happens. The LORD God does nothing, good or bad. The saint may have a different problem. The Master is long gone. Let’s take it easy until a few moments before His coming. After all, the worker who works a full day and one who works for an hour receives the same pay!
There are times when the LORD allows us to see, albeit in part, the reason or reasons behind certain heavenly Boardroom decisions. Let the saint be ready. FULL STOP. That answers our question.
The LORD Jesus said a lot more things. Here is the required posture for the saint.
Watch out that no one deceives you. Verse 4. See to it that you are not alarmed. Verse 6. Stand firm to the end. Verse 13. Do not believe false Messianic appearances regardless of the great signs on display. Verses 23 and 24.
Therefore, keep watch because you do not know on what day your LORD will come. Verse 42.
Check the required posture or actions and reactions. You don’t need expertise to do them. You don’t have control over the information, experiences, or observations between this chapter and the second coming of our LORD. But importantly, the LORD has told us how to interact, act, and react when ‘things’ happen. It is never crafted for the educated or learned. The simplest of minds can afford it.
The LORD is here when the LORD is here; neither before nor after. There will be no manger birth and only a select few witnessing the greatest event in history. His second coming shall be glorious. The “son born to us” is definitely great news. But the appearance “on the clouds of Heaven, with power and great glory” is infinitely greater!
The first coming was ‘low key’ to many but the second coming is gloriously great – with power, sovereign power. The Creator God is in action again! A curtain brought down on history while at the same time raising a flag for a new creation! The reign of the Christ started in earnest and at top speed!
But the intervening period is long and so many things happen. This includes a near-immediate attack on Jerusalem. The physical destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem is detailed. Persecution of the church follows. Deception and several physical events take place in time and space but who cares? The saint shouldn’t. The information provided by their Master has prepared them for these times.
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and the end will come” Verse 14. We are yet to receive the “great commission”. So for now we don’t know who is going to “preach” to the whole world. But there is a possible clue. “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.” Verse 45 and 46.
