Matthew 20 Commentary
Equal work equal pay, not in Heaven! The scales of heaven are skewed! Labor laws are terrible! Injustice would be the right term! And we have an example here.
Think about it again. Each worker should be happy with his pay. He has been paid precisely as agreed. But greediness comes in and distorts everything. Verse 15 explains it. The generosity of the LORD becomes offensive. It is so unnatural to humanity!
What law would facilitate payment of huge sums, beyond the agreed amount, for the first set of workers? None. Equally, what law would facilitate payment of a lower wage for the last set of workers? None. Think about it again and see how our view of justice is distorted. Greediness has a way of reducing your income to zero. On the other hand, your neighbor’s income is elevated to a mountain of cash!
Don’t export our wicked structures and model Heaven after them.
For the third time, the LORD Jesus submits His roadmap to his disciples. All the pieces are there including the resurrection. We guess they still didn’t get it. Who can blame them! They are probably preoccupied with the thoughts of rewards in Heaven.
Won’t it just make sense that my children sit next to the King in the kingdom of Heaven? Every mother would love it that way. Humans! Our view of Heaven is pasted from what we know and think are rewards. See the greediness! We thought there were at least twelve!
Verse 26 never sits well with any human! “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” Mind-boggling!
