Matthew 15 Commentary
Are still so dull? Jesus asked them. Verse 16. Probably yes. Cleanliness of the heart is more important than external cleanliness. But who understands these simple core elements of the kingdom of heaven?
Yes, these are times when the LORD puts His law within the heart of the person. Obedience and disobedience happen from there. Jeremiah 31 verse 33. An act of adultery is a physical manifestation of the adultery in a person’s heart.
Think of it again and know it is not complicated at all! No wonder the LORD Jesus marvels at our dullness!
David knew better. Exasperated by his own sinful heart, he asked the LORD for a new heart. Psalm 51.
A good act that is done for purposes of social media rankings, or to attract more sales, lessen talk by the people around, improve your status as a good person, or impress suitors isn’t good at all. Check the heart and see how much waste there is out there! The saint must be worried!
The audacity of faith! That would be an appropriate title for this chapter. But there are more lessons from this play. We would guess the disciples failed to get it. The silence and eventually the cold and ‘tired’ no from the LORD Jesus was probably meant to provoke the disciples into compassion. Where is the intercessor?
When Heaven said no and when Heaven says no, what becomes of us? We must know only faith in the one and only way to the Father remains – the LORD Jesus Christ. This faith saves us; even us from far, with virtually no known connection to the Abrahamic promise.
Seven loaves of bread at the start of the miracle and seven basketfuls of broken pieces after the miracle is yet another message that the disciples probably understood better than us. Seven is a significant number in the storyline of the scripture.
The daring faith of the Canaanite woman: is an easy pick from this chapter. Faith can break barriers – impossible barriers. And what can be more impossible than a direct NO from Heaven! In pursuing your dreams, have you come up with a conclusion that it is impossible to advance? Faith argues. It is possible! Ponder it.
