Matthew 13 Commentary

The carpenter’s son? Yes. He is born in a normal Jewish family, to Joseph and Mary. He has brothers and sisters. James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas are his brothers.

James becomes the leader of the church in Jerusalem and authors the book that bears his name. Judas is probably another church leader and possibly the author of the book called Jude. He is fully human but the virgin birth is yet another twist. There should be something special about this man looking at his wisdom and the miraculous powers.

But who cares?

Of course, the saint does. We can scan the chapter and see for ourselves the wisdom and revelation from this special man. We are comfortable with the title, the LORD Jesus – Yahweh, the ‘IAM’ GOD.

We are also blessed to see and hear what “many prophets and righteous people longed to see and hear but did not see it or hear it”.

The fruitfulness of the word of the LORD Jesus can be affected by several things: the devil, trouble, persecution, worries of this life, and the deceitfulness of wealth.

The devil does what he did in the Garden of Eden. He steals. He disturbs God’s creation. The parable of weeds has more details.

Some solid facts come out. The Son of Man is the sower. The existence of the enemy called the devil is confirmed. There will be judgment at the end of the age. Angels exist and they report to the Son of Man. In the meantime, the Son of Man ordains the existence of both good and evil at the same time in the same field.

The parable of the Mustard seed and the parable of the yeast explain the fruitfulness of the word when it lands on good soil. There is multiplication!

The parable of the hidden treasure and the pearl play on the deceitfulness of wealth. If you feel money is everything, fine, go ahead and put value on the kingdom of Heaven. It is infinitely valuable! You want to have it at all costs!

The parable of the net expands the activities at the end of the age – when history comes down to a close. The net catches everything. No escape! Now the angels can work! The good fish is isolated and kept away for a joyous existence in the presence of their Father.
