Matthew 1 Commentary
It is impossible to fully capture the greatness and the significance of the events recorded in the four gospels. It is incomprehensible!
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Great and unsearchable things to the saint and not to the unbeliever. They are foolishness to the perishing. Who is this privileged to know the secret things of Heaven? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Matthew introduces the man Jesus as the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham. David played the role of the King in the drama meant to display God’s plan for the salvation of humanity. There is more to the story of David. Second Samuel Chapter 7 points to David’s son who would build the LORD a house to live in.
With Abraham is the repeat of the triad blessing of multiplication, prosperity, and dominion. But it would be achieved through Abraham’s seed.
So Matthew introduces us to the genealogy of the man Jesus. It is full of leaders many of them called kings or governors. It emphasizes royalty. Interestingly, only 5 women are mentioned by name! Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary! Not even the matriarch Sarah is mentioned! Then you know the scripture is up to something!
Fourteen generations between Abraham and David and the same among the other two sections has its own importance – the number fourteen.
Verse 23 is important. Immanuel is born, finally! You want to go back to Isaiah to see the details! It is so enriching!
The boy is named Jesus which is a version of Joshua. We have heard it before! Joshua led the people into the Promised Land. The graphics cannot be any clearer!
Later, we shall hear this promise: “There are many rooms in my father’s house”. It is another place and another time. Whatever it is and wherever it is, we know where Jesus is there we shall be also.
We have witnessed great and mighty things. The prophets longed for this time!
Each line here is a hyperlink! For example, check the story behind each named woman in the genealogy and gaze into the limitless generosity of the Creator God!
We have distinguished names on the list – names after whom we want to model our own Christian walk. But we also have near-worthless individuals whose testimonies are terrible enough for a direct ticket to hell!
But here we are with the scripture proudly pronouncing their names in the sacred family! It is an important point that the scripture makes: even them, even us, whatever our state, can receive compassion and be named in the family of the saved!
