Malachi 3 Commentary
The “lame and blind” animals of chapter 1 amount to blasphemy. The LORD rejects them. You would think the solution is to improve the quality of the animals at the altar of the LORD. Indeed, this would be an easy solution!
Yes, the animals are terrible but that isn’t the core problem here. It is the worshipers themselves that need fixing! So in chapter 3, the LORD determines to come in person and fix the worshiper. “Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD.”
We have another detail for the Son’s appearance. His coming is preceded by the coming of the Messenger. His work is to prepare the way for the LORD Almighty. So we now know the LORD Almighty would come and take on all these titles we have read about in the writings of the prophets: the Branch, Immanuel, the Servant, or the Son with the government on His shoulders…
His coming commences the reign of righteousness. The priests would be cleansed and purified in a refiner’s fire like silver.
Chapter 3 hosts yet another very important declaration: “I the LORD do not change.”
Verses 14 and 15 address an important question of faith. What is the point of faith? It all looks like serving the LORD is a chase after wind! You come out with nothing. The arrogant ones prosper! Evildoers have it easy!
Which saint hasn’t been here!
But the LORD listened. “On the day when I act, they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them… And you will see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.”
It is a future event. The LORD Jesus has more details on this process! For now, the saint remains in the world though not exactly of this world. Obedience is key. Keep to the path of righteousness. Return to the LORD and the LORD will return to you.
