Zechariah 10 Commentary

Zechariah 10 Commentary

The idols speak deceitfully. Verse 2. What is the prophet talking about? Can idols speak? Could this be a direct reference to demons, or the chief demon himself?

Zechariah has expanded the definition of an idol. It includes everything called a god. Money is on the list! Fame is another! They speak deceitfully. Money talks. Money gives directives. The desire for power and authority can be very demanding.

You are dead without it. You are nothing without it. Your worth is measured by it. You won’t live to see another day without it. The gods speak. Check it again: Isn’t this describing the presence of the LORD God without whom all life is lifeless? Idols can speak big but it is all deception.

The god of sex, the god of money, the god of fertility, the god of fortune,… The Old Testament has them all. They still exist under different and more advanced names.

They rule. Therefore, people wander like sheep without a shepherd. No direction!

Then the scripture talks about the cornerstone that would come out of Judah – the peg. Verse 4. The LORD would have compassion on them. Restoration follows.

The LORD will redeem them and they will be as numerous as before. It is a reference to the Goshen times in Egypt when Jacob prospered. There won’t be enough room for them! The land that the LORD had given to Abraham will be restored fully!

Zechariah looks to the future restoration and has carefully skipped any mention of the in-gathering from Babylon. In his mind, the return of the exiles from Babylon isn’t the main thing. And Zerubbabel isn’t the cornerstone nor the peg!

Let the saint look up and see where they are. What great times we live in! But can we see it? Who has believed our message,… Salvation under the times of the Christ is an open gift made available to all yet few extend their hands to receive it. The irony of existence!
