Zechariah 9 Commentary
The tribes of Israel belong to the LORD, and so are the capital of Syria, Tyre, and Sidon. The LORD has an interest in the happenings in these cities. It is a lie from satan that the LORD isn’t interested in the life of the unbeliever. Whatever they do and however they do it doesn’t matter. No. It matters. The LORD stands to judge the nations because of what they do or fail to do.
Christianity isn’t a club whose rules only apply to club members! The Creator God is sovereign over all His creation. We shall all stand before one just Judge.
Tyre is singled out for her fortifications and wealth. Wealth can be misleading. It can give false security. But the LORD moves in and brings it all to nothing.
The hope is that the “Philistines” will see this and be humbled into submission. Then they too can fall under the rule of the Sovereign God.
It is time for rejoicing! Look, your king comes to you! Triumphant yet humble and riding a donkey! The New Testament quotes this verse in reference to the Son’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The rule of Immanuel is here! But stop and reflect. Why is he riding the donkey? It probably has everything to do with the Son’s role as the Servant of Isaiah 52 and 53.
“Your king will make peace among the nations; He will rule from sea to sea, from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth”. Verse 10.
He is the Prince of Peace; how can we forget!
But the saint is reminded, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14 verse 27.
“Because of my covenant with you that was sealed by the blood of sacrifices, I will set your people free – free from the waterless pit of exile.” Verse 11. It is a strong reference to the blood of the lambs during the first Passover. The great exodus became possible because of the blood on the doorposts. Of course, the wounds of the Servant and the blood that He shed at Calvary are the real sacrifice that brings back people from exile.
Return to your place of safety. Let an individual know there is safety in Jesus Christ.
The few post-exile books in the holy script are important because they spell time for us. What the pre-exile prophets thought would happen immediately after 70 years doesn’t happen, as we can see from the post-exile prophets. Instead, the post-exile writings point to yet another day of the LORD – a future event when the Son-cam-king shows up riding a donkey!
When that day comes, the Lord will save his people, as a shepherd saves his flock from danger. Verse 16. Are you saved? It isn’t a stupid question at all!
