Zechariah 6 Commentary
Revelation 6 captures the thoughts presented here. The colored horses represent the winds or the spirits of heaven that the LORD sends out to execute judgment. We are familiar with the whip of the LORD through death, famine, and plagues. Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel predicted these judgments.
The white horse represents victory. The LORD wins, we win too! The white horse is good news!
There is an immediate context to consider. The nations north of Israel, and indeed the other directions, must face judgments as prescribed. It means the LORD had charge of events beyond the knowledge of many at the time. The repeat of the actions in Revelation chapter 6 means the LORD operates in the present tense to rule His creation.
Then we have the crown for the High Priest Joshua. This is strange! Only kings should have crowns!
Zechariah pushes the point that the Branch shall have two offices: the High Priest well as the King, hence the royal priesthood function of the Branch. The inscription on the cross identifying the crucified Jesus as the King of the Jews wasn’t a joke.
The statement by the LORD Jesus Christ that he would build the temple in three days wasn’t at all a joke!
Zechariah toggles between his time and the distant future. The rule of the priest-cam-king doesn’t happen until “you fully obey the commands of the LORD your God”. Verse 15. The good times now hang on the condition of complete obedience! What a task! An impossibility, we must add! This level of performance is impossible for humans!
There is good news for humanity! The Branch is both the King and the High Priest. Forget Zerubbabel and Joshua! They are merely warming the Messiah’s office! Talk about the real High Priest who perfectly represents mankind! The Branch is also Isaiah’s Servant whose wounds bring healing to the individual.
But “who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” Here is the point: He carried our sins! In this way, you can fully obey the commands of the LORD your God. Then the Messiah’s rule comes.
