Zechariah 5 Commentary

You would guess this scroll is Deuteronomy 28, upwards of verse 15. It is flying through the air. It is time for judgment! Importantly, it is time for decision-making! The prophet wants his audience to look up and see the fulfillment of the scripture, specifically as it relates to curses caused by deception.

The woman in the basket represents wickedness – the wickedness of the Israel. She is in the basket, cornered, confined, and restricted. We can think of Israel’s experiences under the rule of Babylon.

The women who carry off Israel are not angels yet they have powerful wings. We would guess the women are equally wicked but powerful enough to enslave Israel and carry her into exile. The LORD hasn’t rescued Israel; instead, the LORD allows the two women to carry her to Babylon.

Wickedness is exiled. Wickedness flourishes in Babylon. Israel hasn’t repented.

Chapter 5 is a complex vision that combines many thoughts at once. At one point, you can think of the scroll as a purifying function of the scripture; consequently, wickedness and its agents pack and go to where they belong!

Standing in Jerusalem is Zerubbabel’s temple. Babylon will have her own temple – the temple of wickedness. It is under construction! When it is completed, the basket and its contents will be placed there to be worshipped.

A decision to stay away from King Jesus isn’t a casual choice you make between football teams! There is a temple you visit and there is wickedness to be worshipped there. You are warned! There is no land between!
