Zechariah 3 Commentary

The High Priest Joshua’s dirty clothes represent the sinfulness of the nation. It is a good picture because the priest represents people before their God.

Humanity’s dirty clothes cannot be removed by a man. We cannot find our own clean clothes! Heaven must dress us clean. Then we can be declared clean.

Verse 6 is important. The cleansed Joshua is then told to obey the laws and perform the duties assigned to him. Salvation is both the point of cleansing and the journey of obedience and performance of duties assigned by Heaven. The Christian walk is performed by the saint. Of course, the saint is greatly helped by the Holy Spirit. “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD.” We shall hear these words tomorrow in chapter 4.

Verse 8 speaks of the Branch that the LORD promises to bring. We can easily guess this Branch is a direct reference to the Messiah, or the Son with the government on His shoulders. The Branch is also Isaiah’s Servant, chapters 52 and 53, whose wounds bring healing or cleansing. It is done in a single day! Remarkable!

When that day comes, each of you will invite your neighbor to come and enjoy peace and security, surrounded by your vineyards and fig trees.” Verse 10. You sense the presence of Edenic serenity! Vineyards and fig trees remind us of the Garden of Peace and Tranquility!

How else can it be? After all, He (Immanuel, the Son, the Servant, or the Branch…) is the Prince of Peace!
