Zechariah 2 Commentary

Chapter two repeats the history-long blessing of increase. Remember the original triad: Increase in number, prosper, and dominate. Genesis 1 verse 28. The LORD underlines His plan for humanity. Jerusalem would once again be a city without walls.

Won’t a city without walls remain unprotected? No. The LORD will be a wall of fire around the city. Remember the pillar of fire that protected Israel from her enemies during the great exodus.

Then the prophet speaks about the future glory of Jerusalem. The LORD would expend His generosity to humanity from Jerusalem. It includes other people from other nations. It is a global feast! The picture is similar to Haggai’s reference to the “glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house”.

The LORD’s promise to live among His people, people from every nation, is a reference to the great restoration. Humanity would once again live with the LORD as it was back in the Garden of Peace and Tranquility – Eden.

The chapter seems to point to a fraction of humanity. Not everyone is saved for special fellowship with the Creator God. Others fall in the category of those to be plundered by their own slaves. Verse 9. None Israelite communities fall under the phrase “many nations”. The generosity of the LORD is extended to all. We too the chance to call upon the name of the Creator God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
