Haggai 2 Commentary

“My Spirit remains among you.” Verse 5. We can identify 3 phases in human history. We have the first phase before the fall of man. It is a time of perfection in the presence of the LORD. After the fall, we have difficulties in child-bearing, prosperity is hampered by a cased ground and the presence of thorns, and dominion is lost. The last phase comes with the rule of the Son.

We are living in the second phase, as did the prophet Haggai. Verse 5 becomes very important as an assurance that the Spirit of the LORD isn’t at all absent from among the remnant.

The temple works are on but what a shame of a structure in comparison with Solomon’s temple! And what a blow to the hopes of a people that waited for the restoration of the kingdom as in the times of King David!

Be strong, all you people of the land. Verse 4. The remnant needed these words of encouragement.

Then comes an important announcement. “In a little while…” Who wouldn’t remember the words of the LORD Jesus Christ? It is a signal to wait. Though it lingers, wait.

Yes, the LORD God is at work but let the remnant wait. Restoration shall come but Zerubbabel isn’t Immanuel or the Son with the government on His shoulders.

“The desire of all nations shall come.” We may apply this thought to the rat race that humanity is involved in. We constantly change our political leaders because we always want more. We wish for perfection in everything we do, but who gets it? The LORD Jesus Christ is the perfection that we have always needed, wanted, and hoped for – the completeness of what we think is a good parent, a good partner, or a good transaction.

Haggai speaks during the rebuilding years after the exile. Already, we can tell the hopes and aspirations of the people are shuttered. The post-exile days aren’t great at all! But what about the great promises of restoration that the remnant expected as per the word of the LORD? The prophet Haggai answers these questions. “In a little while…”

The Book of Haggai is short enough to be read in under 8 minutes, but the content is time-defining. It helps the saint to keep looking into the future for the time of the Son with His government. May saints also rejoice in the thought that “My Spirit remains among you.”
