Zephaniah 3 Commentary
The LORD within her is righteous; He does no wrong. Morning by morning He dispenses justice, and every new day He doesn’t fail. Verse 5. We can celebrate the declaration of the universal fact of God’s justice. The fact that this justice is both present and current in real-time can be mind-boggling! We probably understand.
Oppression, rebellion, disobedience, lack of trust, unprincipled prophets, treacherous, and profanity at the Sanctuary. Yes, they exist side by side with the justice and righteousness of the Creator God! Unbelievable! Yet we probably understand.
If there is a court session every day, it means we have convictions every day! The saint knows he is in the dock every day – as the accused. And he is guilty! But there stands our advocate bailing out the saint every day! This thought here celebrates the generosity of the Creator God in high definition! Then the sinner experiences forgiveness.
But who is interested in the generosity of the LORD!
Then the LORD speaks of the coming purification. Jerusalem will be pure because the LORD will have removed from the city the arrogant boasters. The worshippers scattered everywhere would call upon the name of the LORD!
And why not? Indeed, why not. Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart. The LORD has taken away your punishment. Who wouldn’t think of Isaiah’s Servant in chapters 52 and 53!
Look at verse 15! “The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you.” It is clear; the scripture points to the rule of Isaiah’s Immanuel, or the Son born to us with the government on His shoulders. His reign of peace is described at length, thus closing the book of Zephaniah.
