Nahum 3 Commentary

Nahum 3 Commentary

Nineveh is described as a “lying and murderous city”. Yes, full of wealth to be looted and plundered!

Satan has his own version of prosperity. Behind much of what we admire are murder and deception. We are reminded of satan’s mission – steal, kill and destroy. Yes, behind the power, the wealth, and the influence is a mission to steal and destroy.

Verse 4 references the attractiveness and the charms of Nineveh. Who doesn’t want to be part of the elite? Power attracts. We seek alliances with the wealthy and influential. But behind the external appearances is deception, a trap set up for enslavement purposes. There is no free lunch!

But Nineveh will be destroyed!

Then the scripture talks about Thebes, the capital of ancient Egypt. “There was no limit to her power.” Yet Thebes fell. Regardless of their power, systems come and go. The LORD cuts down their power. It is always a building on the sand!

“No matter what you do, you will still be burned to death or killed in battle.” Verse 15b. Strong and stern warning indeed! Let no wealth deceive anyone. Satan’s gifts are temporal; the LORD decrees it!

The last word in Nahum’s book is ‘cruelty’, Assyria’s cruelty. No wonder she is destroyed!

The saint can look up again and see things around them for what they really are. The world is Nineveh! Deception, murder, injustice, and cruelty provide the fuel for success. You don’t climb any further without cheating or committing a crime against the Creator God. Nineveh is calling – the power of prostitution! But make no mistake about Nineveh’s mission – enslavement! He comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” said the LORD Jesus Christ. John 10 verse 10.

Nahum, therefore, describes to us what the enemy comes to do. Yes, it is Nineveh and Thebes, and all others, including you and me if we stay on the path of deception and ‘cruelty’.
