Nahum 2 Commentary
Chapter two is important as it announces the fall of one empire and the rise of another. The prophecies concerning these world powers give us the privileged information behind the scenes. The LORD decides these matters!
Assyria has run its race and Babylon together with her allies, the Medes, must now position themselves for world dominance. But the LORD has pulled the strings against Assyria!
We remember how the Assyrian commander insulted the Sovereign God of Abraham, when he marched against Jerusalem, during the days of King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah. By this time, Assyria had reduced Israel to a city-state; only Jerusalem remained standing.
You want to remember the Book of Jonah and compare the outcomes. Repentant Nineveh was saved at Jonah’s preaching. Nahum’s Nineveh doesn’t have the same blessing. It pictures the two contrasting outcomes at the end of the times – the unrepentant crowd called ‘the goats’ and the saved flock of sheep.
There is the mention of a uniformed army and weaponry comparable to our own modern military formations. Assyria was huge and Nineveh represented the power, wealth, and organization of the mighty empire. But Nineveh’s fall wasn’t human! Let no man trust their own wealth to save them when the LORD visits.
The LORD does intervene in human affairs. The proud and wicked systems are brought down, never to rise again. Evil punishes evil. While they preach invincibility, the LORD has it all planned. He declares them enemies. There is no escape. The power of the LORD is visible in the confusion of history. And eventually, it works out exactly as the LORD plans it.
