Micah 7 Commentary

Micah 7 Commentary

What misery is mine! Who is speaking? Of course, the prophet Micah is speaking. But check verse 6 and see the context in which the same thought is quoted in the New Testament!

The LORD Jesus Christ is the word of God. We read the Old Testament knowing that we hear His voice with each line we read. But when the LORD Jesus Christ quotes specific lines from His words, we want to stop and listen more.

The LORD God is miserable for lack of holiness in Israel. Something must be done!

Verses 8 through 10 describe what the LORD planned to do. In the immediate context, Israel would be punished. Look carefully at the words of the prophet again: “Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.”

They sound like those of the Servant! Yes, He “sinned against Him,” He bore His wrath…

This is the hope that the prophet watched for. Verse 7. He waited for God his savior.

The saint is reminded by Isaiah that, “surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering… He was pierced for our transgressions.”

Micah closes with the prophet’s prayer. It is a throwback to the good times of Israel’s deliverance. But the prophet says more by his references to critical elements of Israel’s and humanity’s history. “They will lick dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground.” Verse 17a. Who wouldn’t want to think about Genesis 3 and the LORD’s punishment against the serpent!

And hear these words: “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.” What beauty! What generosity! And what hope for lost souls! Thus Micah closes, on a note of humanity’s greatest news. What a book!
