Micah 4 Commentary
The prophet turns his attention from the immediate future to the distant future – the time he calls the last days. The last days commenced with the birth and work of the Messiah. They run through a period of waiting until His eventual return to make all things new.
Micah gives us a good picture of this period. The door would be opened for many nations. The LORD God would teach them His ways. Verse 2. It is also a moment of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” John 14 verse 27.
We have come to know this time as the time of Immanuel, the Son with the government on His shoulders. He is the Prince of Peace. Micah describes a time when strong nations would beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Apply this scripture to an individual who has the ability to hit back but the rules of the Son “bids him not”; he stays calm.
The reign of the Christ (Greek) or the Messiah (Hebrew) commences the reign of peace. Micah appears to refer to national or even international matters. But we have another important layer of application. “The kingdom of God is within you”. Luke 17 verse 21. KJV. Indeed, saints have spoken of intense peace within, regardless of the commotion around them.
By verse 5, Micah appears to refer to a time when two worlds would exist: the world of the redeemed and the world of the unredeemed. This could be the intervening period when the LORD gathers the lame, the blind, and the deaf. It is a time when prisoners are freed to enjoy freedom under the reign of the Christ.
The last section focuses on Micah’s immediate future – probably more than a century from the prophet’s own day. Jerusalem would be exiled to Babylon.
The nations would rejoice but who understands the plans of the LORD? The big news is already there: the last days will be glorious! The lame would be gathered under the reign of the Son. There lies the greatest hope for humanity. The news of Jesus Christ should be making headlines as it happens to be the biggest event on the globe but who knows the thoughts of the LORD?
