Micah 2 Commentary

The opposite word for an act of faith would be doubt. Verse 1 introduces us to a deeper definition of faith. It is a definition that combines both obedience and submission but in the opposite direction of the wickedness, faithlessness, or unfaithfulness of verse 1. You plan iniquity and you implement it because it is within your power to do it. This is the very opposite of faith.

Faith would be the power to not plan evil at all, even when it is within your power. It would include the power to decide against any evil action, regardless of the ability to sin.

But who has this power? Not the subjects of Micah’s sermon in this chapter? You, perhaps. Who would want to claim this special position other than the Christ? Then we know salvation isn’t born out of personal effort aimed at perfection.

You covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. Then you know your faith is near zero.

But the LORD responds with a heavy hand – a disaster from which you cannot save yourself. Heavy indeed!

“Disgrace will not overtake us.” Evil is wrapped in false hope; false security. Zero fear of the LORD! Nothing happens, after all!

Then the LORD promises healing. The powerless man can have the power to do what is right again. It happens when the LORD brings together the remnant of Israel. The last statement of the chapter is a throwback to the time of the LORD’s dominion. It is a reference to the time of Isaiah’s Immanuel or the Son with the government on His shoulders – the Prince of Peace whose reign knows no end.

It was Micah’s hope and lay further in Micah’s distant future. We now live in a time when the rule of the Son (the Christ) is a current feature. He can rule in your heart. You become His slave. He becomes your Master, your LORD. The rule of Christ is a possibility Micah could only dream of but a possibility that an individual today can achieve.
