Amos 9 Commentary

Amos 9 Commentary

“I am determined to destroy them, not to help them.” Verse 4 stands opposed to Jeremiah 29 verse 11 where the LORD announces that He has good plans for Israel.

Verse 9 introduces us to another concept. There is a sieve. Saints will be isolated and spared from judgment and trouble. This sounds like a future event.

Let not Israel think of the Creator God in small ways. He is sovereign over all His creation. Verse 7 expands the LORD’s rule over all other lands. The LORD created all things and they all fall under His sovereignty.

Then we have a direct reference to the future restoration of Israel. It doesn’t happen until the times of the “Son born to us”, Immanuel, or the Prince of Peace with the government on His shoulders. These are the blessed times of the Messiah, the LORD Jesus Christ.

Amos’ imagery consists of thriving cities, plush and bountiful gardens, peaceful dwellings, and natural goodness to mankind – the hope and aspiration of mankind. The generosity of the LORD is such that saints have known and tasted this life even under the intense heat of the world’s wickedness. The complete restoration comes when the Son returns to bring history to a close and open a new chapter in creation.

Amos ends his volume on the note of hope for a renewed nation under the rule of ‘David’.

Amos began by pronouncing judgment on the nations, including Israel and Judah. It is a huge statement from the LORD of justice. Righteous men and women have always looked forward to a day will injustice would end and when the righteous rule of the Son would commerce in earnest. Amos has made it clear that the LORD moves in and destroys the pagan worship system at Bethel. Then the LORD’s purpose will be achieved. Justice will roll on like a river.

Amos ends here.
