Amos 6 Commentary

“Then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms?” Such is Israel’s level of spirituality that she favorably competes with the Philistines! And it is dangerous!

The LORD had decreed the destruction of the Canaanite peoples because of extreme wickedness which included child sacrifice. Israel has fallen to the same level and now faces the same punishment. But who cares? They are complacent! They take it easy. No one wants to be serious.

Affluence has a way of encouraging complacency. Israel is enjoying physical prosperity. They have wealth, albeit ill-gotten wealth. They live in mansions. But they are short-sighted. They don’t see beyond their noses. Disaster lies ahead!

“You will be among the first to go into exile.” And as history would prove, the northern Israelite kingdom went into exile first.

“You who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar.” The prophet is playing with the words. Lo Debar means nothing. The things the world may think of as having value are actually nothing. They stand for nothing. It is all meaningless. Check it for yourself and see the emptiness of vanity. It all means nothing!
