Amos 2 Commentary
Moab is punished for her aggression against Edom. This could be important for times when we think it isn’t a big deal to murder sinners. After all, they are sinners! The temptation to think of sin as sin only when it concerns God or His people can be great. Moab’s punishment reminds us that the LORD God isn’t impressed with sin regardless of the victim.
Judah is punished for neglecting the law.
Then the prophet turns his attention to Israel and it isn’t good. There is slave trade and injustice. Today’s extreme sexual immorality isn’t a new problem. Israel would compete quite favorably!
Won’t Israel remember the generosity of the LORD God?
It is a vain hope. Consequently, Israel would be punished, just like her sinful neighbors.
The rationale behind wickedness can be impossible to understand. Whatever it is, and God knows, it can never be down to the absence of care. The LORD has provided enough blessings for life and godliness. The saint is invited to ponder these facts as he navigates the waters of life.
