Joel 3 Commentary
Chapter 3 brings together a couple of key thoughts: the planned punishment of the nations and the restoration of God’s people. And there are layers of application. One thought focuses on actual historic events in Joel’s immediate future. Another thought focuses on recurring ‘judgments’ on the nations throughout the ages. Yet another thought points to a distinct ‘day of the LORD’ in Joel’s distant future which brings down history’s flag and raises up the rule of God permanently – Judah inhabited forever.
Just how great is Calvary and how does it compare with the famous day of the LORD?
“It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.” Luke 23 verse 44.
Can it get bigger than this? The significance of Calvary can only be more important. Yes, it signals the restoration of God’s people under the rule of the Christ. The saint must reflect on the importance of the Kingdom and what it all means for the household of faith.
The great prophet Isaiah spoke of the Prince of Peace with the government on His shoulders. Then we hear these words: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14 verse 27.
Joel comes to a close with chapter 3. The call to repentance is a common thread in this prophecy. God’s people are promised deliverance. But many remain undecided – in the valley of decision. It calls for a clear-the-rot operation that sees the LORD swing His sword against wickedness and the perpetrators of wickedness.
The Book leaves the reader smiling with the thought that the LORD reigns on Mount Zion! Joel’s distant future is actually our present! The LORD reigns! The Christ reigns! Sweet Calvary!
