Hosea 14 Commentary

Hosea closes beautifully with chapter 14. We hear 3 voices. The prophet speaks first. Let Israel return to the LORD. But how?

Let Israel return to the LORD with the following words: Take away our sin, accept our confession. Receive as restitution our repentant prayers. Assyria won’t save us; horses won’t get us where we want to go. We will never say ‘our god’ to something we’ve made or made up. You’re our last hope. Is it not true that in you the orphan finds mercy?” The Message Bible.

An individual has this posture when he surrenders his life to the rule of the Christ. Sin must be taken away. It’s the LORD that takes it away. It is never a personal effort! Confession becomes important. God, not Assyria or horses, becomes your savior. You renounce and denounce idolatry and evil.

Then the LORD speaks!

“I will heal their waywardness. I will love them lavishly… I will make a fresh start with Israel. The Message Bible.

We know the scripture is talking about the time of Immanuel, the ‘Son born to us’ with the government on His shoulders. It is the time of refreshing when hearts of stone are benched permanently. Instead, the LORD gives us new hearts of flesh! The Servant will have suffered and His wounds will have brought healing to the returning soul.

Finally, the author or the publisher of the prophecies of Hosea speaks. He concludes the volume by the declaration that the LORD’s ways are right. The righteous live by following them. Sinners stumble and fall because they ignore them. He simply repeats the statement Hosea is famous for: “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”

Check this chapter for words you need to say when you return to the LORD. It is timeless!

Hosea ends here. Thank you, LORD, for this knowledge.
