Hosea 13 Commentary

Where is your king that he may save you? Verse 10a. Hosea references a time when the people rejected the rule of God over them. They wanted to be like the other nations around them. They wanted a human king over them. In a mocking way, Hosea asks what has become of their ‘master plan’.

Human plans are useless. It is an easy pick from this chapter. But there is more.

He became guilty of Baal worship and died. Verse 1.

Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction? Verse 14. Now the scripture mocks death!

Death comes with Baal worship. After that mankind can only multiply sins. We invent and innovate sin.

Where, O death, are your plagues? Wait a minute! Who is this and what kind of message is this that mocks the LORD’S judgment? We have probably heard the voice of the Son, so-called the Servant in Isaiah 42, 49, 52, and 53. At the cross, He scorned death. And on resurrection Sunday, He defeated death.

Hosea makes the point that death will be defeated. Isaiah 53 gives us the details. The New Testament is more positive by the announcement that believers in the LORD Jesus Christ have eternal life. Indeed, death, where are your plagues?

Hosea’s message is double-faced. It is a double-edged sword! Saints see it and they are excited because their enemies fall flat and the righteous reign of the Son begins. But wicked men and women, the already-dead, see it and know their end has come. It is a clear-dead-wood exercise!

The main line, however, is that the dead wood can live again. Where, O death, are your plagues? The Son (the LORD Jesus Christ) brings eternal life and laughs at death.
