Hosea 4 Commentary

Hosea 4 Commentary

God indicts the whole population: the priests, the prophets, and the people.

Don’t charge the people! The priests and prophets take the lead in wickedness!

And let not the men charge their daughters who become prostitutes, and their daughters-in-law who commit adultery. It’s the men who pick up whores! It is a cycle! Everyone is involved. Righteousness cannot land! There is simply no landing space!

The chapter reflects on the saint’s walk. There is never a whore if no man ever picks up one. Sin happens when there is consent. It is a point of disobedience. One will have ignored the laws of the Creator God. The consequence of this kind of ignorance is death. “My people perish for lack of knowledge.”

Wine and whiskey leave God’s people in a stupor. They consult a dead wood for answers. The world is in need of answers but who wants to consult the holy script? What you consult becomes your god. What you depend on becomes your god. What you love becomes your god. Idolatry is easy; it is accessible. You can practice it without opening your eyes!

They have better names today. Sex shrines still exist but under different names: brothel, massage parlor, hotel, lodge, mansion, or any place of ‘darkness’. But they are still shrines! They are still worship places. The devil is worshipped. Know each time a thought of sexual immorality crosses your mind or each time there is sexual immorality, you will have visited the shrine and worshipped the devil there.

But their sex-worship leaves them impotent! There are consequences for idolatry! Impotence points to a lifeless existence – devoid of spiritual productivity. The Holy Spirit will have been silenced with zero fruit. You feel it. You know it. You actually regret it.

Israel is stubborn! How can the LORD lead them to greener pastures? Verse 16. There is green pasture for the humble.
