Daniel 11 Commentary

Daniel is a man of prayer. Chapter 10 was another moment of intense prayer. And we had another angelic visitation. Chapter 11 is the continuation of the message from Daniel’s angelic visitor.

The message is complex, and you easily understand the difficulties that Heaven has in communicating the future to a mortal man!

Let’s check out a couple of facts. Daniel has been in prayer for the nation of Israel. We can guess that even the latest ‘quiet’ time in the presence of the LORD has to do with Israel’s restoration. The angel’s message is massively important because Israel must know that real restoration lies deep in Daniel’s future. In between, the angel explains a series of events that will actually have an impact on the beautiful land’.

There will be battles and persecution. Attempts will be made to restore the nation to its former glory, but there will be failure and casualties. Verse 14.

Then we have the “abomination that causes desolation”. Verse 31. Surrounding this event, both its immediate past and its immediate future, are human events that affect the well-being of God’s people. There are times of peace as well as hard times for the remnant. Verses 33 to 35 describe the church’s response in these times.

Verse 35 seems to point to an end that is yet to come. It means these events are probably applicable to several periods in the timeline of history. The fact that the New Testament talks about the “abomination that causes desolation” means these events describe the general picture of life for the saints between Daniel’s time and the end. We find our own times between these lines!

Regardless, the scripture makes the point that these events are still under the careful watch of Heaven. Verse 36. Each of these epic rulers comes to an end. There is more to the story, but that is for tomorrow.
