Ezekiel 48 Commentary
Chapter 48 continues the allocation of land among the tribes of Israel. Interestingly, the land is not exactly the size of the original portion of land that the LORD gave Abraham. It is much smaller! It cannot be too important because we know these are mere symbols. It is also important to note the context of Ezekiel’s message. The land in question is a physical item whose value has kept on reducing from the huge and original portion that Abraham got.
At the same time, Ezekiel is projecting a future whose meaning is fully understood by the New Testament. The LORD’s residence has enough rooms! Yes. But because of poor human choices, not all the rooms will be filled. Probably Ezekiel’s reduced portion points to a similar picture at the end of the times.
The descendants of Zadok have a special place in God’s compound! Won’t the saint stop and ponder the special blessings that lie ahead of them! Keep to the narrow path, avoid the wide and popular way, and you have the Zadok’s special portion in Heaven. It is an easy pick from the last chapter of Ezekiel.
Ezekiel closes his volume with chapter 48. What a journey!
What caught your attention as we navigated the book? Ezekiel’s impossible image of the physical manifestation of the presence of the LORD? The valley of dry bones? Tyre’s fall from her position of perfection in Eden, the Garden of God? What about the Gog’s future battles? Ezekiel’s volume speaks of the past, both distant and Ezekiel’s near past. It speaks of Ezekiel’s near future as well as distant future.
Regardless, the impossible image is key as it brings the impossible into perspective. Think of the man Jesus Christ. He is both the Lamb of God and the Lion of the tribe of Judah! He is the King of kings but also the Servant at the same time! He is David’s God but at the same time the son of David. No wonder the Pharisees were confused!
The Book of Daniel is up next. Keep loving the scriptures!
