Ezekiel 45 Commentary
Ezekiel’s ministry looked back, all the way to the Garden of Eden. It looked to the future, to the times of the Messiah. It also looked at Ezekiel’s immediate future; the return of scattered Israel.
It is not exactly the slavery of Egypt; slavery nevertheless. Babylon, Assyria, and the Egypt of Ezekiel’s day are among the many places where the LORD scattered Israel. They must come back. It is not exactly the great exodus under Moses but the importance is the same.
So just like through Moses, the LORD defined the Sanctuary systems for the Israelites of the Exodus, the LORD has defined the Temple for the returning Israelites of Ezekiel’s immediate future. Worship is important; so the Temple systems are most important.
Let the saint remember: the LORD has taken Ezekiel on a virtual tour. Probably Ezekiel doesn’t know what the LORD knows; the temple structure and the systems around it will never be built. We know what Ezekiel didn’t know because we can look into history and see things for ourselves.
The Temple with its systems was to be described for the saints to see how far they were from the ideal worship of the Creator God. The representations in the chapter become a mirror for the saint today. It is about separation. There is a world from which we need to be separated from.
Therefore, this chapter becomes a yardstick for the saint’s life surrounded by the world. Create boundaries of worship. Create boundaries of residence. Let these be holy places. The walls are important to protect against enemy intrusion. The enemy is sin.
The temple rituals are symbols of the Christian walk. Let the saint ponder the importance of Calvary and what the blood of the Lamb of God stands for.
