Ezekiel 33 Commentary

We can clearly see what the LORD is saying to Israel. Yes, you are in trouble because of your wickedness. But you can repent and reverse your downfall. The LORD wants to forgive and restore you. The LORD hates the sight of death – for the wicked. Yes, there is judgment over your heads; the sword is drawn but you can still act. You can repent and have a fresh start.

Ezekiel has brilliantly covered the subject of repentance. Each man dies for his own sins. The same message was underlined in the earlier chapter. The sins of the fathers won’t be loaded on the sons. The sons have it within themselves to chart their own destiny. They can decide for righteousness regardless of the decisions of their fathers.

Of course, the devil makes it look impossible. Ezekiel repeats himself severally in the hope that Israel would hear the word of the LORD and repent.

Punishment is deserved but grace is a real possibility.

The chapter closes with a message from an informer on the destruction of Jerusalem. Against the hope and will of the LORD, Israel is not repentant. The sword finally strikes; no empty threats, after all. Jerusalem has fallen!

It means everything to the saint today. Without repentance, the sword falls, and death results. But repentance brings life. The New Testament calls it eternal life. It is life that happens even if one were to die. John 11 verses 25 and 26.
