Ezekiel 27 Commentary
There is something unique about Tyre. It is a multicultural society. It is a grouping of the finest brains from around the region. Just about everyone is doing business with Tyre. It is a commercial hub with a thriving economy.
Why is Ezekiel bothered with such details? Fine details of unintended historic importance to the reader, but importantly to the saint, a combination of factors that make wickedness thrive?
Economic stability hence spiritual independence; who needs God? Fine brains and smart military machinery; who needs God? When the going is good and great, why question the gods that have performed so well? Don’t change a working formula!
Trouble is often better than success. Success becomes the evidence of “smart operations”. All is well. The religious would even argue that the LORD has blessed them! Instead, it is the struggling saint who doesn’t know what he is doing!
Chapter 27 is detailed for a reason. It is solving a huge problem for the saints. Tyre is the center of attraction. It is an example of success. Books are written after its model. If you want to make it, be a Tyre. Location is everything. Human resource – the finest brains are a must. Trade and industry are key. The world defines what success is. It is Tyre. Let the saint check, where is God in Tyre?
But the LORD is not happy. Tyre is gone, “gone forever, and merchants all over the world are terrified, afraid that they will share” Tyre’s fate. This verse closes chapter 27. It provides us with a hint. Shouldn’t Tyre’s fate warn everyone dependent on human stability and their own strength?
And now we must ponder this thought: human success, the pinnacle of human civilization and industry, the success we know, how does it measure up against God’s definition of success?
