Ezekiel 25 Commentary
We have heard the LORD’s judgment on Israel – covered by the last 24 chapters. Now the scripture turns its attention to the nations. Ammon is first. “Because you said, ‘Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned…”. Cheering wickedness against the LORD is wickedness itself. Does the saint’s heart grieve when the name of the LORD is profaned?
Moab and Edom looked at Jerusalem’s fate and declared it ‘ordinary’. They scorned the name of the LORD that Israel always boasted about. Israel’s God is nothing, they must have thought. He is just like all these other gods. They demeaned the name of the LORD. Edom and Philistia went further and probably attacked the weakened nation of Israel and took revenge on them.
The family matters. You don’t profane my name and go unpunished; you don’t touch my children and escape unhurt.
God’s love for His children underlines the core of chapter 25. A poorly kept child reflects the image of its parents. Israel’s neighbors saw her fate and immediately concluded Israel’s God, (actually god to them), was just like any other god – useless or at most, not as powerful as Israel wanted them to believe.
The LORD comes down strongly on such thoughts with decisive judgment. Look at the poor and know their God is strong. Look at the saints, poor and desperate may be, but know their God is strong.
