Psalm 111 Commentary
Great, glorious, majestic, lasting, righteous, compassionate, powerful, faithful, just, generous, upright, holy, and awesome. The psalmist has associated all these descriptive terms with the Creator God’s works, deeds, or wonders.
How does this list compare with the picture that the saint has of his or her God? We are invited to ponder these things.
When we seek greatness, glory, power, or awesomeness, we are basically repeating the devil’s song. Or when we fail to associate these qualities with the name of the LORD or His works, we subtract from who the LORD God is.
The psalmist ponders these things and praises the LORD.
Our spirituality is shaped by our understanding of these qualities. Back in school, we all could tell if the headmaster was in the school hall. The noise in the school hall told the difference. Saints who have come to appreciate the presence of God at all times know they don’t have a moment’s chance to misconduct themselves. It all begins with our understanding of who God is.
This psalm is reminding us of the qualities of the LORD God that we must think about. It should affect our behavior.
