Psalm 82 Commentary

Psalm 82 Commentary

Like begets like. The children of God are also gods, exactly like their father. A chicken cannot have a puppy for a baby. It should be simple logic. The Jews are right. The claim by the man Jesus Christ that God is his father is terribly off balance.

Verse 6 is the subject of John 10 verse 30. The man Jesus Christ references this very verse to support his claim. By addressing Yahweh, the El-Shaddai God, as his own father, the man Jesus claimed divinity and equivalence with the Creator God Himself. This kind of blasphemy deserved immediate stoning.

We want to read this psalm in the light of what the LORD Jesus Christ said. Interestingly, even the psalms are referred to as the Law by the LORD Jesus Christ. They should be treated with the same reverence as the Torah. They cannot be set aside.

The Creator God created man and woman in His image, in His own likeness. So like beget like. But the Jews knew more. In between came Genesis chapter 3, the famous fall. Man and woman were never the same. Afterward, sinful Adam and Eve began to reproduce but the fruit was in the fallen likeness. And so it remains to this day.

“When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. Genesis 5 verses 1 to 3

Actually, psalm 82 is a lament by the Creator God. The man He had created in His own image is no longer the same. A god he should be but immortality has been replaced by mortality because of wickedness. There is injustice and love for wrongdoing.

Consequently, ‘gods’ die like mere mortals; sons of God are like mere men.

But the ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. This affects the structural design of life. The foundation of life is off balance. This calls for action by the planning office. And this office is not manned by a fellow mortal. How dare this kind of talk by a mere mortal from Nazareth. We even know his parents and his brothers.

Well, He is not like us. He is a god. The creator God has started on a new page. He is the exact image of the Creator God. Therefore, he cannot die like a mere mortal. And he didn’t. Resurrection comes into sharp focus.

And for his followers? Here we have it: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” John 11 verse 25. Mere mortals can attain immortality again but it is by believing the LORD Jesus Christ.

And then the question: “Do you believe this?” Martha did, what about you?
