Second Samuel 8 Commentary

Chapter 8 is awesome. Having run through the events of the Book of Judges, and having experienced the disappointments of kingship under Saul, a break is well deserved. The good times are back. This looks like it; Israel finally taking possession of the land. We are looking at a nation in control of its own destiny.
The reader can confirm that the LORD has fulfilled His word via the prophet Nathan. But who isn’t shocked by the achievement in such a short time? Then you know the anointing is at work!
The list is impressive. The Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Arameans, the Edomites, Hamath, and Zobah. Even in the immediate context, the land represented by these nations is massive. The last time we saw this kind of success was when Joshua marched into Canaan. The anointing is the same. The mission is the same.
Very few individuals have the honor of having the ‘servant’ title. When the LORD called David ‘my servant’ in chapter 7, we immediately knew David is a special case. But really, no one imagined victory at this scale in such a short period of time.
Will the oppressor oppress forever? This chapter says no. The LORD sends a David to restore dominion. This chapter speaks to us today when we feel like the battles will never end.
“You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. Genesis 49 verse 9-10.
Lion of the tribe of Judah, we are humbled in complete amazement at what you did here, through your servant David. Your people Israel would live in safety and prosperity, in a land flowing with milk and honey. Our own story will be transformed from tears to joy as you make all things new at your second coming.
For the victories in this chapter; and for the victories in the lives of your servants here and now; thank you.
