Exodus 5 Commentary
Having secured the support of the elders, now Moses faces Pharaoh. I think we can understand Pharaoh. It took the LORD a long debate to convince Moses. It took some miracles to convince the elders of the people. I should think Pharaoh needs a lot more to be convinced. He clearly doesn’t know the LORD or thinks the LORD is one of the many gods of Egypt. Why should he listen to Moses?
The first encounter results in increased suffering for Israel. And his own people respond to increased suffering by blaming Moses.
Moses reports these event to the LORD. The summary of the report is that Moses has executed the task, as required. Pharaoh hasn’t yielded. What is worse is that the suffering has increased for the victims. The coming chapters will give us details of how the LORD responded to Pharaoh’s position.
Note: Have you ever prayed for someone only to see them get worse? Have you ever prayed over a situation only to see it worsen? Don’t be discouraged. The LORD does allow the devil to respond this way for our sake. We need a better victory! We also need to understand that the devil won’t give in without a fight. Simply kneel down gain and repeat the prayer in Jesus’s name – the same simple prayer. It’s the LORD turning on the heat. It’s not you. Just repeat the prayer.
